3 Problems of Parallel Structure
3 Problems of Parallel Structure 3 Problems of Parallel Structure 3 Problems of Parallel Structure By Mark Nichol Faulty combination of elements in sentences is a common syntactical flaw. Here are three examples of this type of organizational error. 1. ââ¬Å"She is bright, creative, and has much to share.â⬠This sentence, in which the predicate includes two adjectives following a verb, then a conjunction and a verb phrase, is out of balance. The subject is credited with three attributes, and they must share one verb, or each must have its own verb. The sentence initially appears to follow the former rule, but then another verb appears. The only way to maintain this structure is to combine bright and creative into a single item: ââ¬Å"She is bright and creative and has much to share.â⬠(Note that the comma after creative is no longer necessary.) Alternatively, creative could be assigned its own verb, but it and the final phrase would require a proprietary repetition of the pronoun as well: ââ¬Å"She is bright, she is creative, and she has much to share.â⬠2. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ve saved a lot of money by using less paper, less water, less energy, and by creating less waste.â⬠Savings have occurred thanks to two factors: 1) use of less paper, water, and energy and 2) less production of waste; this sentence fails to structure this description correctly. The list of three items is distinct from the second element of the sentence, so it must include a conjunction between the second and third items: ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ve saved a lot of money by using less paper, less water, and less energy and by creating less waste.â⬠(Note also that because ââ¬Å"less energyâ⬠is no longer mistakenly regarded as the penultimate item in a list of four things, no comma is necessary after the phrase.) 3. ââ¬Å"His positive energy and willingness to work hard on every assignment is key to his success.â⬠When two nouns separated by a conjunction follow an adjective, the adjective generally applies to both nouns, but here, positive applies only to energy, so the pronoun must be repeated before willingness to clarify that ââ¬Å"positive willingnessâ⬠is not implied: ââ¬Å"His positive energy and his willingness to work hard on every assignment is key to his success.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Ordeal by Fire The Civil War and Reconstruction by James McPherson and Essay
Ordeal by Fire The Civil War and Reconstruction by James McPherson and James Hogue - Essay Example The Free Soil Party argued that unlike in slavery, a free society provided greater moral and economic gains. In light of the clear cut agenda, the party worked to press for a repeal of existing slavery laws in Ohio, and New York among other states (Byrne, 2006). The Wilmot Proviso is one of the key historical developments that led to the American Civil War. The proviso would have outlawed slavery in all the new areas annexed from Mexico or from any other place later on. However, conservatism elements were eventually pitted against the advocates for a free society during the American Civil War. The Compromise of 1850 comprised a set of legislation endorsed by Congress in an effort to resolve slavery, which threatened to divide the country (Byrne, 2006). Despite the incorporation of controversial clauses in it, it was successfully passed by Congress and immediately united the country on slavery (Mitchell, 2001). The law kept the Union stronger by stemming cases of an imminent split, thus delaying the eruption of the Civil War by a decade. The Kansasââ¬âNebraska Act, enacted in 1854 established Kansas and Nebraska states. This expanded the American territory for civilian occupation and effectively repealed the Missouri Compromise, which had been adopted three decades earlier. The new law granted people the authority to decide slavery issues. As a result, pro-slavery settlers came from Missouri to Kansas to exercise this right. Their political clout in territorial polls was usually boosted by Missourians who made their way into Kansas mainly to take part in the polls. They created strong movements such as the Blue Lodges. Eventually, abolitionist settlers arrived in Kansas from the East with the sole aim of freeing the state of slavery.

Final paper - Essay Example hites, hence the birth of the well known quote from one of his prominent speeches: ââ¬Å"I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.â⬠The relation between religion and racism has been an ongoing research for a long time amongst the worldââ¬â¢s top religious scholars. In general, my research depicts that there is a positive relation between these two contradicting topics. The outcomes of my study put forward that both the regularity of church turnout and belief salience is no longer considerably connected to racism. (b). Ingenuousness at first thought turned out not to be related to racism. However after some deep deliberations, in which important background variables such as age and education were factored in, it suggested otherwise. World religions tend to declare worldwide brotherly love yet history is beleaguered with moments in which religion has provided a good reason for all kinds of mayhem directed towards people of dissimilar race or culture. A good example of this is the holocaust. From this evidences, a significant number of historians and theology scholars argue that religion should obstinately be measured as a channel for racism. When one tries to make a synopsis of these frequent attempts, a very uneven analysis is obtained. There could be two main explanations for this. One is that there is no compromise on how to quantify religion in order to achieve consequential outcomes. Another one is that there exists two main guidelines in which one can look for a clarification of the observed relation: one can decide to employ religious factors or turn to non-religious factors .The course in which you choose to look for a clarification will affect the conclusions that are drawn up. I will start by giving a brief outline of applicable literature. This allows me to stridently differentiate the outcomes of two different studies that I
